Building an Open-Source Archive for Born-Digital Dissertations

    No full text
This proposal for a Level I Digital Humanities Start-Up Grant would support an interdisciplinary workshop aimed at identifying the issues, opportunities and requirements for developing an open-source system into which born-digital dissertations (e.g., interactive webtexts, software, games, etc.) can be deposited and maintained, and through which they can be accessed and cross-referenced. The workshop will build upon the framework set up by the Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (NDLDT) and the United States Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Association (USETDA), which support the creation and dissemination of digital dissertations, but, despite best efforts, do not currently offer a comprehensive, central repository or index of born-digital dissertations such as exists for print (e.g., Proquest). One of the primary goals for this workshop will be to develop a plan for the development of such a tool as well as the identification of a project advisory board

Ladies that UX Leadership and Organization Report

    Get PDF
Ladies that UX (LTUX) is an international organization focused on mentoring women in the software industry. In order to explore both the mission and the focus of the international organization and smaller, localized chapters of LTUX, we conducted a series of surveys and interviews. These surveys focused on how local groups of LTUX were formed and structured, what leaders see as the goals and needs of their chapters, and how members interact with both each other and with the broader international organization. Our research goal was to gain some insight into means of formation, communication, and structure of these local chapters and to understand and anticipate what chapter needs are, in order to better grow LTUX as an organization

A case of Sherlockian identity: Irregulars, feminists, and millennials

This essay describes a study of how fans participate in memory-making activities. I call this activity participatory memory, blending theories from collective memory and participatory culture. Interestingly, while studying spaces of memory for Sherlock Holmes (the Canon) and BBC's Sherlock (2010–), I began to realize that these spaces have much to do with gender, generations, class, and cultural differences that helped regulate (and even segregate) different ways in which people were allowed to participate in the Sherlockian fandom

Interfaces as Rhetorical Constructions: reddit and 4chan During the Boston Marathon Bombings

    No full text
ABSTRACT In this paper, we describe the rhetorical construction of two community sites and analyze how these sites support the information sharing practices of these communities. By examining activity on web-based discussion boards reddit and 4chan, we show how these spaces are developed and shaped over time by participants making rhetorical moves in order to share content within these ecologies. During the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, we show how these spaces can be altered, disregarding the more typical practices on these sites. When community members embrace or reject these uses, it is as much a reaction to the content as it is to the cultural misuse of the community. In the case of reddit and 4hcan, this acceptance and rejection is especially true when the makers and maintainers of the system are participants themselves. Through this examination, we conclude that it is important to understand the rhetorical construction of these systems as reflections of the cultures they support

Creating Digital Scholarship; Collaboration Across Countries and Disciplines

Building a digital book is a process in which the author must do the scholarly work of an extended article or monograph plus the application work of building a website, app, or other kind of interactive system to display the scholarship. Like many digital humanities projects, building a digital book can take a team effort

Nutritional treatments for Alzheimer\u27s disease: A narrative review

    No full text
BACKGROUND: Knowledge is limited about ways to treat, manage and slow the progression of Alzheimer\u27s Disease (AD). It is suspected that there are potential nutrition-related components that may contribute to the pathology of AD. This includes nutrient deficiencies and/or dietary factors that may lead to comorbidities, increasing the risk for development. Thus, many nutrient-specific, dietary and medical food treatments are continually being researched. Some studies even combine both nutrient and dietary interventions to treat AD. The purpose of this review is to explore and discuss the efficacy of several macro- and micronutrients, antioxidants, dietary therapies and combined components to treat or slow the progression of AD while providing valuable insight into the role that nutrition may play in the treatment of this disease. METHODS: Using PubMed, Google Scholar, EBSCOhost and Science Direct, databases were searched using pertinent keywords. A total of 33 research articles were included, primarily consisting randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical human research trials with the addition of few animal studies. Full-text studies in detail were obtained, assessed with data extracted and summarized. RESULTS: Overall, it was determined that folate in conjunction with Donepezil, may improve cognitive function and inflammatory markers. Omega-3 fatty acids (FA) with É‘-lipoic acid may reduce cognitive and functional decline rates. Adequate B-vitamin status is needed to obtain the benefits of omega-3 FAs. Vitamin D supplementation and medical food Souvenaid may be considered for cognitive benefits in patients with AD. Medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) supplementation is not yet supported. Antioxidant treatment is not recommended as it may accelerate cognitive decline. DASH, Mediterranean Diet, MIND and ketogenic diet therapy may be considered as dietary treatments in AD patients. Nutrient supplementation requires more research to determine appropriate dosages. CONCLUSION: Alzheimer\u27s disease remains a major health concern to the aging public. The anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidative and neuroprotective effects of several nutrition-related treatments have been shown to be beneficial in combating the progression of this disease. Patient individualization must be considered prior to treating. It is recommended that future studies determine appropriate dosage amounts to minimize adverse effects
